A Portrait of Todi

I lived for 12 years in this wonderful Umbrian hill town and I still consider it my home. The people my wife and I met there were profoundly hospitable and have remained our friends ever since. I published most of these images in Al di là del tiglio (Beyond the Linden Tree, Alinari) in 2002.

The references are inevitable: the serene composition, the honest rapport with the subjects he photographs, the highest technical level of these photographs remind us unequivocally of Paul Strand's images of Luzzara. These are images that come from a narrative analysis where attention is placed on the face of the subject and as well as his surroundings, with the purpose of describing not only the facial characteristics but the complex psychology and subtle ties that connect the subject to his space and to the photographer.
